The repurposing of a vacant iconic office building straddling the City’s financial centre and the creative media and tech district of Shoreditch.
The vision was to reimagine an uninspiring building and to create collegiate spaces that would foster an energetic workspace atmosphere where companies could meet and share ideas in a comfortable yet architecturally exciting environment that put the user experience first.
A comprehensive refurbishment was undertaken that preserved the 1920s Art Deco heritage of the building’s exterior. Internally, our architects designed ground-breaking spaces with transparent meeting rooms cantilevered above shared space, an internal cycle ramp providing street access to the basement and the extensive facilities available that included bike storage, yoga studio and basketball court. To complete the transformation of this iconic building, new office floors with roof terraces providing long views across the City, and a complete remodelling of the existing floors to provide Grade A contemporary space for a decerning modern occupier were completed.
Alphabeta was fully leased to creative media and tech companies by completion of the refurbishment and went on to receive design awards from the RIBA, British Council for Offices, and the Office Agents Society.
Following completion of the refurbishment, the property was sold to a private overseas investor.
“For the reactivation of this vacant building, user experience and collaboration were the guiding principles at the heart of the project. The widely acclaimed cycle ramp was both a functional and architectural innovation”.
